Should I Buy a Guitar - Should I Buy a Guitar?

By David W. Mount

If you are really getting into your guitar lessons or you really want to get into guitar lessons, you are probably wondering 'should I buy a guitar?'
Buying a guitar might be a really good investment. Your first question should be what kind of guitar you want or need. There are three general categories when it comes to guitars.
Acoustic, classical, and electric are the types of guitars available. With in each category there are many things to consider. But at least narrow it down to which type you want. Acoustic and classical guitars seem pretty similar. But they feel and sound quite different.

Acoustic guitars have steel strings and sound bold and bright. They also have a narrower and longer neck than a classical guitar. Classical guitars have nylon strings and sound muted mellower. Electric guitars output to speakers and are of two main categories based on how they pick up string vibrations.

The size of your guitar should also be one of the first things you consider after you ask 'should I buy a guitar?' It is just like buying clothes, it needs to fit your body. They should feel comfortable when you get into position and when you play. Guitars are available in or sizes for very small people or children.
Another concern should be how much you are going to spend on your guitar. You should be prepared to spend a considerable chunk of money. The more expensive guitars tend to last longer and sound better. But also take into consideration that this is your first guitar and you probably don't need to spend more than $300 for it. Somewhere between $150 and $300 is a good place to start.

As you consider 'should I buy a guitar' you should also keep in mind that musical instruments are often marked at a higher price. You can often negotiate with a salesperson and get a better deal than the sticker price. Be sure to check out how high the strings are from the fret. High strings are the sign of a substandard guitar and one that will make you sore later on.

If you are really searching for a deal go online. A trustworthy site can get you a great guitar for a fraction of the price you would be paying at a store.

If you are saying 'should I buy a guitar' and price is the deciding factor, definitely go online.
