Worldwide Music Venues

By Corey C. Butler

When you want to have a great time listening to live music, the venue can make all the difference. If you're somewhere drab and lifeless it can make even your favourite bands less impressive. But there are plenty of places across the world that really push the boat out when it comes to showing people a great time and giving them the perfect atmosphere for whatever music they're into. These are some of the well-known and not so well known venues out there.

It's seems fair to start with England's best. You may have heard of a little place called the Royal Albert Hall. It's not exactly a secret, but the reputation's well founded. If you get a chance to see an act you like there, go for it. For the other end of the spectrum you might want to check out The Shed in the North of England. This village hall in Hovingham with a thrilling sixty four-person capacity is host to all manner of weird and wonderful jazz and folk acts. Greek Street in London hosts another tiny venue called The Hideout, where acts play for private functions in a 'caravan' in a flat above a shop. It's very Alice in Wonderland.

Of course Europe in general has a lot going for it. If you want opera houses, you're got plenty to choose between. Probably the grandest is La Scala in Italy. Something less cultural and more immediate is A38 in Budapest. If you like electronic it's well-worth a pilgrimage. Rock fans might be better off in Berlin, where Wild at Heart makes you dazed with a combination of heavy metal, whisky, ancient icons from lost religions, and Elvis trinkets on the walls.

For something that's crazy in a whole new way, you can find a fun night out in Tokyo at Liquid Room. The atmosphere here is really friendly, and everybody is generally good to one another. On the other hand in the US, for grand wonder, what better than the open air with the Gorge Amphitheatre in Washington State?

So there's plenty out there to enjoy. It's just a case of getting to them, and making your way past the bouncers.
