Music has always played a big role in the life of human beings. It has so many functions that aided in the development of the total well being of an individual. Once they know the piece by heart, it is then time to record the basic tracks. This is best done in a recording studio, where every aspect of the song goes under scrutiny and is listened to by critical ears. Overdubbing comes next, the sweetening process that allows performances to be recorded in sync with the previously recorded material. Editing follows soon after, which may very well be the thin line from a music that rocks to a music that sucks.

Mixing is the next step, and you can do it online or otherwise. Online mixing is commonly referred to as in the box mixing. When you say out of the box, it is aimed at the type of mixing that is done the way the pros do it, complete with outboard equipment and a mixing board.

For the perfect sound, mixing in done in sets of three so that every added element is clearly distinguishable. Mastering follows after all these three repetitions. There are many reasons why a music needs to be mastered.

For instance, you will have a hard time to be objective especially when it is your own. You think you have made a perfect song this time, but a pro can still improve on what you think is the best. Also, a little bit of professional mastering will make good mixes even better.

Band Interview: Gringo Soul

Gringo Soul - better known as Brandon Giannasi of Dallas, TX - is funky, soulful singer-songwriter. I recently sat down for a phone interview with Brandon to get a better sense of who he is, both as a person and as an artist. First and foremost, I inquired to Brandon how he came up with his performing name. "I was working with a group of Hispanic people, and they referred to white people as 'gringos,' he said. "The word 'gringo' just rang with me, so I just decided to roll with it." Next, I asked Brandon where he finds his musical inspiration. "I get most of my inspiration from the late and great Elvis, as well as Nirvana, Sublime, Creedence Clearwater Revival, and even from artists like Vincent Van Gogh.

In keeping with his performing name, Brandon tells me that he writes his songs about "being an average gringo" - the celebrations, the life lessons, hardships, and his growth as a musician. "Most of my creative thinking and lyrics writing come while I'm driving," says Brandon. "There's just something about it that gets me thinking and really gets my creative juices flowing." At 4 independent album releases and 34 songs to his credit, Brandon must do his fair share of driving. "On stage, I use my guitar, Korg Keyboard, loop pedal, K oscillator, and octopad. The crowd watching me perform get to see me set up each song using these components, and then I go into the song itself."

Brandon is hosting an event called The Trash Bash Music Stash on June 28th. It's an event that you volunteer and you pick up trash on three streets in Dallas TX. After the trash pickup is over, there will be free food, free beer and other drinks and a free concert. And if you don't fee like picking up trash, you can pay $15 and still have some food, drink and enjoy a great show!

Brandon says if he could open for any band right now it would be the Stone Temple Pilots because he has a lot of respect for the music they make and it would be an honor for him to be able to play a show with them. "Since I haven't gotten that opportunity, I would have to say my favorite show so far has been at the Woodshed in Fort Worth" Said Brandon. He said it was his favorite because he ended up performing for around 500 people who responded well to him and his music.

As a final thought, I asked Brandon what advice he might have for his fellow independent musicians. "If you're in a band and struggling to find an audience, or if you're interested in starting a band - if or when you get denied to play a venue or bar, you just need to stay strong. Get back up, and get on with your day."

It's All in Your Head, Part One: A Guide to Finding Drumheads That Are Best for Your Style of Playing

In this 2 part article, I'm going to detail some general guidelines to help you select the right drumheads that will match your specific requirements.

Drumheads are one of the most critical elements of your drum. The type of drumhead that you select will determine the overall sound that your drum will produce. By installing a new drumhead, you can bring a drum "back to life" by adding tone and projection that were lost by using a worn, worn-out head. You can also improve the sound of a less expensive drum by replacing its stock head with a new, professional-quality one.

Prior to the mid 1950s, drumheads were made of animal hides, like calfskin. This totally changed when the DuPont Company created a polyester film they called Mylar. By using this plastic film instead of an animal skin, drumhead manufacturers such as Remo and Evans made incredible sonic options possible for drummers while adding consistency in quality and tone that wasn't previously possible. With calfskin heads, drummers had to deal with the frequent need to re-tune their drums due to weather and temperature fluctuations. Plastic drumheads pretty much eliminated this challenge.

Today, plastic drumheads are utilized not just on drum sets but also on timpani, marching drums, and timbales, as well as hand drums like congas, bongos, djembes, darbukas, frame drums, surdos, pandeiros, doumbeks, tambourines, and caixas.

# of Plies

The first thing to choose when selecting heads for your drum set is head weight. Single-ply heads offer a lively sound with longer resonance and sustain, while 2-ply heads yield a darker, thicker sound with increased durability. If you're a heavy hitter and want a lower, more controlled tone out of your drum, you may want to go with a two-ply drumhead. If you're a finessed player and want to hear more overtones, you might use a single-ply drumhead.

(NOTE: There are variations to this approach. For instance, you might play heavy rock but prefer the sound that a single-ply head produces. I personally use single-ply drumhead and hit pretty hard - which means that I need to switch my drumheads more frequently than if I was using 2-ply drumheads.)

Other types of drumheads include:

Dot - This drumhead features an additional dot-shaped ply (approximate diameter 5") in the middle. The dot can give you the durability of a two-ply drumhead, but with a sound more like that of a single-ply head because only 1 layer of plastic sits on the drum's bearing edge. Drumhead manufacturers like Remo, Evans, Aquarian, Ludwig, and Attack all offer their own versions of a drumhead featuring a reinforcement dot.

Three-ply - Aquarian recently launched a three-ply drumhead for players who require the ultimate in durability. Obviously, this head produces an extremely dark and lower fundamental pitch.

Interview With Dallas TX Rock Band, Redline

Redline is a soulful rock group out of Dallas Texas. The band is comprised of Joseph Campise on lead guitar, Joe Rodriguez on vocals and acoustic guitar, Austin Adams on bass and Nate Williams on the drums. Redline is a high energy rock band that is highly influenced by Jimmy Hendrix and The Red Hot Chili Peppers.

While sitting down for this interview, Austin tells me that the band got their name from the term "redlining your car" - a phrase which to them symbolizes giving it your all and putting everything you have into everything you do. The band has been together for five years and has loved every moment of it.

When Redline begin working on a song, they just start by "going with whatever comes" to their heads. What they do next is pretty unique; Austin claims that it is the same as what the band, the Postal Service, had done way back when they were off at college - as members of Redline are today. Someone from the band will record a chorus or riff with his cell phone and send it in a group message to their band mates. Then all of the members will critique what's been sent as a group. At the end of the semester, the whole band will meet up for band practice back in their hometown, during which time they jam out their previous ideas and bounce things off of one other.

Redline plan on releasing a couple of singles over the summer from their latest album, which was released in January. When I asked the band how close the members are personally, they responded by telling me that they all feel like playing in this band together is what they were born to do. The band has been through bad luck and good luck, bad shows and great shows - and very much like what the back story behind their name would suggest, they have learned to not ever give up, "even when you think life couldn't get any worse," the band says, "never back down."

The band also says that they will almost certainly never go the way mainstream music goes. Austin says, "the group has been through too much sh*t to not make it, and I love it." The band's hardest struggle when they first started playing music was building up their fan base and getting the response they were really looking for in potential fans. After putting themselves out there though, they finally were able to foster the support they were so desperately searching for. The members of Redline are looking forward to performing together for years to come in the future.

They provide better listening environment in recording studios, home theaters and mastering rooms by reducing LF resonance.

Basically, there are two types that the people from the said industry use. The first type is called resonator types. They can absorb sound frequencies, only admittedly at a very low range.

It is primarily for this reason that the porous absorbers are the ones marketed to the public today. They are smaller in size and they do not need to be specifically tuned to match the job. They are also quite easy to build. In fact, more and more people make their own bass traps rather than buy them. It allows them to save more money without compromising anything.

The Truth About Cymbals, Part 1

I absolutely adore cymbals. You could even say they're a bit of an obsession of mine. I personally own over 125 of them and use 50 cymbals on 1 drum kit and 53 on another. The many brands that I've played over my 40 year career include Paiste, Zildjian, Sabian, and Wuhan.

While cymbals have existed for roughly 5,000 years, there unfortunately have been some popular misunderstandings about these majestic instruments that continue to this day.

So with accuracy in mind, it's time to do some myth-busting! Below are a couple of the popular ones that I've heard the most:

1. "Cymbals should never be played immediately after being exposed to extended temperature extremes."

Many drummers believe that you should make sure that your cymbals become used to room temperature before playing them if they've been stored in extreme conditions. The reason for doing this is the fear that the cymbals will crack or become damaged.

This myth simply is not accurate.

Cymbals are incredibly durable in terms of the temperatures that they can withstand. Given that they were manufactured at high temperatures of roughly 1,500 degrees F, it's really only at that kind of heat that would harm a cymbal. At real world conditions (even -20 degrees F or 115 degrees F), we're not even beginning to approach that level of extreme heat or cold. So if they're stored overnight in your vehicle in subzero weather or they've been baking in your non air-conditioned attic all summer long, your cymbals will be perfectly fine to play once you unpack them and set them up.

2. "Over time, cymbals can deteriorate and wear-in through use, which distorts their sound."

Cymbals don't really age, they just get soiled. What most drummers are hearing when they play an "aged" cymbal or one that they've owned and have been playing for a while is a residual buildup of dirt. It is this dirt - along with oils transferred from our hands during handling - that changes the sound, not the age of the cymbal or how long we've been playing on it.

In general, clean cymbals sound brighter and have more overtones, while dirty cymbals sound warmer and can be a bit drier. If you prefer more overtones, clean off your cymbals. Keep them free of fingerprints, stick marks, and grime. If you are a fan of warmer or darker sounding cymbals, don't clean them. I promise that over a period of time, they'll naturally accumulate some dirt from playing and handling, and produce a mellower type of sound.

I had a recent chat with the great Steve Smith (Journey, Vital Information) about this very topic. He agrees with me, and also enjoys the vibe of mellower, darker, and drier-sounding cymbals for the type of music that he plays. Steve even jokingly remarked, "I wish someone would make some spray-on funk or dirt that you can apply to a brand-new cymbal to get it to sound like you've owned it a while!"

Science Fiction Music Beyond Inner Pain

Therapies that help people are always needed in the world, fortunately they are many. However, music is one of those universal therapies that is often welcomed, regardless of whether is it science fiction music or not.

No amount of planning of preparation can prevent life from happening. It is how people deal with the events of the aftermath of a painful event that matters. Sometimes it seems easier to just want to run and hide, but this is not often possible. The individual will then have to face up to whatever is causing them the pain and deal with it.

Family and friends can always do their best to try to help the person when they going through a hard time. However, unless they too have gone through the same thing, they might not be able to achieve this. Sometimes the person does not want to hear the words of things getting better especially if they are in a dark place. The light only comes on when the person decides to take charge of their live and make the necessary changes.

As you the reality of whatever emotional upheaval you have endured dawns, you will soon start to see the clouds parting. This is not easy because if you are not in the right place this will take time. However, sometimes you have to dig yourself out of a tight spot so that you are able to enjoy life to its fullest. Without some resilience you will not hope to make things better.

Healing is a process and so you should not feel you need to be back on your feet when don't need to. All you have to focus on is making things better and that is something that takes one day at a time. Sometimes it takes one minute at a time in order to achieve your healing objective.

When you feel ready, try not to feel guilty for reaching out for help. Instead see this as a sign of the change that you are trying to make. Interview With Country Artist, Kaylee Rutland

Eighteen-year-old Kaylee Rutland, a Texan contemporary country singer and songwriter, will be playing this year's Dallas Music Fest in it's twelfth consecutive run. Kaylee's musical inspiration comes from artists such as Reba McEntire, Sarah Evans, and Carrie Underwood. "Music has always been something I've wanted to do," says Kaylee, "it's been a huge part of my life since I was a kid." Kaylee's songs primarily deal with themes of friends, faith, and love - things.

"If I hear someone say something that I think would work great in a song, I'll take that knowledge with me and work with it to write my lyrics," she says. When Kaylee is writing songs, she says she is hard on herself because she wants the lyrics and music to sound as good as they can. Once Kaylee has the basic lyrics down for a song, she takes what she wrote and her and her band meet up, jam through it, and bounce ideas off of each other.

It has been about a year since her first EP was released; she is just about done recording her second EP and plans on releasing it sometime very soon. Kaylee just finished recording a song and music video with country stars, Jamie O'Neal and Colt Ford. "It was a real blessing to record with such nice and down to earth people like Jamie and Colt," said Rutland. When Kaylee was just starting out in music, she says her biggest challenge was getting on stage and being comfortable instead of feeling awkward. Other than that Kaylee says rarely has any trouble with her band, pointing out that they get along really well.

Her favorite show she has played so far has been the Pregame Party on the Plaza; she has played this show twice now and has loved it both times. It is a two-hour set that was before the Dallas Stars hockey game. "It was freezing cold but I loved every second of it!" she says. If Kaylee could open up for any artist of her choice, she would choose to open up for Reba McEntire because she is her idol.

As advice to other up-and-coming performers much like herself, Kaylee says to listen to your loved ones and not the skeptics. "The ones you need to listen to are the ones who believe in you," she says, "if you believe in yourself, then other people will start to believe in you. If you believe in yourself, you will succeed." Kaylee ended up playing on one of the headlining spots during the 2014 Dallas Music Festival, and we wish her all the best in her future career. Band Interview With Ataxia

What are your songs about? (attempting to avoid any cliche) But in life everyone experiences setbacks and let downs, what keeps them going is how the individual chooses to deal with the problem. They can either accept defeat or move past the obstacle and take their life into their own hands. Each person is responsible for their own path and we are trying to promote the fact that when you go down, be ready to fight to get back up and succeed.

Having dealt with a great number of these experiences as a musical group already, we've felt the focus hits us all on a very personal level and it is for that reason more enjoyable to write about. It definitely serves as a release for all of us.

What is your genre? We get asked this question all of the time. Instead of limiting ourselves to one magnified genre, we like to write what we think sounds good and what everyone in the band is vibing off of depending on our mood. Some songs are heavier than others, some are more passionate. If you want to throw it in a genre call it metalcore.

Do you guys have anything coming up? Shows, new album, stuff like that. We had just released our debut EP, "Memoirs," and are playing that in its entirety at all of our shows in addition to a new single to be released within the month. The song features guest vocals from Spencer Charnas of Ice Nine Kills and we are very excited to put it out. It's a lot different from what we've been doing but for the better. We are fortunate enough to open for Fallen Captive's EP release show on June 28th with many other Ohio metal greats including Along Came a Spider, Skies of December and more. In addition to that we are in involved in an online voting contest to play the blossom date for warped tour, so fingers crossed for that one. (July 17th).

What advice do you have for people who want to form their own bands? To try to keep this answer as short as possible, it's first about finding the right group of people and making sure that you are able to work together musically and personally. Individually, if music is where your heart is at and you want to perform, don't let anything stand in your way and keep acting on your passion. Act as if the band is one mind and each member is a different cog or gear keeping it running. If one gear fails, the whole project crashes. Also, to space out your shows so that you can bring in more of your fans. Most people don't want to see their friend play every weekend so it'll be hard to bring in a draw that way. By bringing a draw in front of the right people can help benefit you more than anything else, as networking is one of the things we value most.

The style that they have is like a blend of urban sound and dance that gives you a unique feel. It has included some anthemic rock in it that gives depth and energy to it. That is what makes them unique from the other ones. This uniqueness helped them in becoming successful.

Dylan and Lyan have released their debut album which they named Greatness. Last March 2014, it has hit the airwaves after it has premiered on TV. They have chosen the title of that album carefully. They wanted to let other people realize that they could also become great.

That album has been very inspiring to other people regardless of their age. They wanted to let others know that you could achieve your goals if you would just search from within. You just have to determine what it is in your life as it comes in different forms.

If you will be listening to all the songs which they made, you will be impressed on it because they have produced it incredibly. When you listen to it, you will think back on the times of happiness that you had in your life. Their songs are also filled with so much energy. You can still feel that energy even if you will be listening on one song to a new one.

Since they are successful, they have been traveling and performing around the world in many countries. The concert tickets will usually be sold out. One would also notice that the fans came from different generations. Most of their works have won the hearts of all people.
