London Vaudeville Theatre

The Vaudeville Theatre is located at 404 Strand, London, WC2R 0NH. The closest Rail Station is Charing Cross.

The foremost theatre at this place was designed by C J Phipps and opened on 16th April, 1870. The theatre was subsequently remodelled, to designs once more by C J Phipps, and reopened on 13th January, 1891.

This theatre added the still surviving four-storey high frontage in Portland stone. Oscar Fingal O'Flahertie Wills Wilde (16th October 1854 - 30th November 1900) was an Irish writer, poet, and great aesthete who, after writing in assorted forms throughout the 1880s, became one of London's most stylish playwrights in the early 1890s. Nowadays he is remembered for his quips, plays and the tragedy of his imprisonment, followed by his early death.

At the height of his fame and success, whilst his masterpiece, The Importance of Being Earnest, was still on stage in London, Wilde sued his lover's father for libel. After a series of trials, Wilde was convicted of gross indecency with other men and imprisoned for two years, held to hard labour. In prison he wrote De Profundis, a long letter which discusses his spiritual journey through his trials, forming a dark counterpoint to his earlier philosophy of pleasure. Upon his release he left immediately for France, never to return to Ireland or Britain. There he wrote his last work, The Ballad of Reading Gaol, a long poem commemorating the harsh rhythms of prison life. He died destitute in Paris at the age of forty-six.

The current and 4th theatre on this site was designed by C J Phipps and opened on 28th April 1897. Now mostly plays were presented here, with just the occasional opera. Then in 1916 Chu Chin Chow started a record-breaking run of 2,238 performances. In 1929 Noel Coward's Bitter Sweet was produced here and enjoyed a run of 697 performances. After the Second World War the theatre mostly presented musicals, which included Brigadoon in 1949, Paint Your Wagon in 1953, West Side Story in 1958 and Fiddler On The Roof in 1967 which had a run of 2,030 performances. The current production, Phantom of the Opera, opened here on 9th October 1986.

Shaftesbury Theatre brief history: The theatre was developed for the brothers Walter and Frederick Melville by Bertie Crewe and opened on 26th December 1911 having a production of The Three Musketeers, as the New Prince's Theatre, becoming the Prince's Theatre in 1914. It had a capacity of 2,392 along with a stage 31' 10" wide by 31' deep.

The Prince's was the last theatre to be built in Shaftesbury Avenue, and is situated near New Oxford Street. It had considerable success with an 18 week season of Gilbert and Sullivan operas, presented by the D'Oyly Carte Opera Organization, in 1919. These became a standard attraction at the theatre inside the 1920s, interspersed with runs of theatre productions transferred from other venues. Basil Rathbone appeared at the Prince's Theatre in May possibly 1933 when he played Julian Beauclerc in a revival of Diplomacy. The Rose of Persia was revived at the theatre in 1935. The D'Oyly Carte returned in 1942.

The theatre was sold to EMI in 1962, and became the Shaftesbury Theatre the following year. Broadway productions that transferred to the theatre for long runs inside the 1960s included Gentlemen Prefer Blondes (1962), The way to Succeed in Enterprise Without having Actually Attempting (1963) and Small Me (1964).

Component of the ceiling fell in on 20 July 1973, forcing the closure of the long-running musical Hair, following 1,998 performances. The theatre almost fell victim to redevelopment, but a campaign by Equity succeeded in having the theatre placed on the 'Statutory List of Buildings of Special architectural or Historic Interest', as well as the theatre was Grade II listed by English Heritage in March 1974.

The theatre reopened with West Side Story a year later. Long runs inside the 1980s included They're Playing Our Song (1980) and Follies (1987). The next decade included lengthy runs of Kiss of the Spider Woman (1992), Eddie Izzard: Definite Post (1995) and Rent (1998). Shagging is a form of ballroom dance despite the popularity of Austin Powers. A six count dance, the Carolina Shag is a partner dance. The goal of the dance is to look like a Saturday morning cartoon where the characters are stationary from the waist up while the legs are going crazy as they dance. The male leads his partner through kicks, spins and amazing footwork.

It's interesting that the dance is not called the North Carolina or South Carolina Shag, partly because it the official dance of both states. Originating in the states, the dance began in the early 1930s as newspapers started talking about "Shag Parties" in 1932. Hod Williams and his orchestra provided music for numerous "Shaggers Nights," with tickets costing 40 cents for men, 20 cents for ladies and 10 cents for children. The basic steps are the kick step, box step and the triangle with about seven combinations of these steps.

To do the kick step, one must step forward with left foot, kick with the right foot, step back on the right foot and ball change left to right. To box step, begin with the left foot, drop the heel, step to the right close the left foot to the right. Then do the same starting with the right. To do the triangle, step your left foot forward diagonal to the right, ball change right to the left, step to the right, and close left foot to the right. Then do the same starting with the right foot.

It has been written that there are hundreds of variations to the Carolina Shag. The term "shag" refers to a number of swing-type dances that were popular at the time. There was even a Carolina Shag scene in the 1989 movie called "Shag" starring Bridget Fonda and Phoebe Cates.

Don't be embarrassed about shagging your partner if you feel like dancing. You can even go down to Carolinas and show off doing their states' official dance. So go out there and shag it up!
