Where Musicians Look For New Inspiration

By Jeremy Hume

One surefire way to get out of your songwriting rut is to listen to lots of music and composers you've never heard before. You may unlock some new inspiration from artists you never even knew about. Influences that you can feed off of as you work towards creating your own style. The synergistic nature of building off other composer's creativity can leave you with better ideas than you ever dreamed you could come up with alone.

Feelings are the liveblood of musical composition, or any creative composition for that matter. It is all about communicating what you feel to your audience. That is why it can be a real source of inspiration to think about what you like or what you don't like and the feelings they stir within you. You can then build on these feelings and come up with some wildly creative musical ideas you might never have even thought of.

Other people can be the biggest influencers on our mood and the way we feel. Also, human interactions are very emotional and thus can create very strong feelings in us. Work at communicating these feelings to your listener and you will have the makings of a very moving song. If you are stuck for inspiration, think of the last time someone made you feel really great or really bad and write about it.

If you have ever been to a place where the energy just makes you feel so good (or so bad), just thinking about this place can provide excellent sources for musical ideas. Try to recall how being there made you feel and what you thought about when you were there and you'll have the basis for a song. Places could be: childhood places, favourite areas to go, vacation spots, or any other place you have an emotional tie to.

Another source of ideas is situations you may have been in. Everyone has situations that they have been put in that made them feel uncomfortable. These can be great inspiration for songs because they stir up feelings. Anytime feelings are involved that can be communicated to the listener, there is potential for a deeper level of understanding between the composer and the audience.

What is something you feel like you can't live without? Now think about why you can't live without it and also consider how you would feel if you lost it. If you think about what makes it so special and why you treasure it so much, you may be confronted with some surprisingly powerful emotions that could feed into your creative process.
