The Evolution Of Local Hip Hop

By Tammie Caldwell

Hip Hop is one of the coolest genres of music. It consists of rhythmic sound with lyrical rhymes. This is the category that rap falls under. Under this, there are also other subcultures that came. Breakdance is influenced by the beat of this kind of tune. Those who live down South of Florida are into it. As a matter of fact, everything about this culture started there.

The instruments used are turntables and percussion. Later on, beatboxing was discovered, which is done entirely from the mouth of a person. This alone can accompany the chanting or rapping of a rapper or even a song. The latest beats these days are taken from synthesizers. One example is dubstep. Local hip hop Fort Lauderdale, FL is one of the places any urban music lover can go to.

Rap falls under this category but this genre is not generally about rap. It can be accompanied and mixed with other music genres like Rhythm and Blues, pop, and even rock. There are also other varieties of this subculture. You can find that DJing is also very interesting, It is not necessary that the artist has to sing or rap. He or she can also be a break dancer, a graffiti artist, or a scratcher.

On the other hand, he breakdancers do not produce the beats. They simply jive into it, while the graffiti artists are artists who associate their arts with urban culture, which is the culture of hip hop. They have a very booming culture as many other sub genres emerged one after another.

They are the ones who first coined the term and incorporated other styles with it. It is perfect when combined with Rhythm and Blues. For instance, the song is comprised with chanted verses and Rhythm and Blues chorus. The result is very appealing to the youth since the topics being written in songs are mainly about love, being broken hearted, and being bitter about love.

It was even mixed with rock or metal early in two thousands. Linkin Park, Limp Bizkit, Crazy Town, and a lot more, were the names that anyone usually drops when asked about rap metal. This is another subculture of both hip hop and metal music. But this has become controversial, especially because of the lyrics and the influence of the artists.

The rise of Kanye West, Lil Wayne, and Eminem has branded the genre as somewhat the music that gives bad influence to the youth. With blunt profanities in the lyrics of songs and misdemeanors in public, these artists are being banned by parents in the playlist of their children. But these never go unheard as they are being played in radio stations without strict compliance to censorship.

But this is a good form of expressionism. This is one of the most artistic ways to exercise freedom of speech. Many have been sued because of anti government lyrics but they always get away because of the freedom of speech clause.

The newest form of expressionism is Fliptop. Some find it very appealing and funny but others find it offensive and sometimes, discriminatory. The main gist of fliptop is to mock the opponent through rapping. And then rebutting to defend oneself through freestyle. Sometimes, the words formed are just as nonsense as they can get.
