One way to determine the age is checking the manufacturer and the serial number.

Checking if it has some unusual designs or it has some ornate cravings and ornate inlays can be done as well when in determining the age. After finding out the conditions both you and your trusted dealer will be discussing about it then that dealer is going to share with you some methods that you can apply for the restoration.

After examining all the parts, disassemble now the piano. During this step, it is required that all the hard wares will be removed, but when removing, all parts that are taken off should be labeled to reassemble it easily. Remember all processes being done when disassembling. And since this project may take longer for its completion, you may take some photographs during the process.

The next step is to remove the varnish. Furniture paint strippers are utilized also for this and the purpose of this stripper is removing the old varnish. Once the old varnish has removed already, use paint thinners and wool which is made from fine steel and is lint free to clean the wood. Sand the wood after cleaning with a sandpaper. Light touches only are recommended to be applied. After this is removing particles of dust and also debris with a tack cloth.

When repairing the dings and the dents, use the wood filler. A lacquer finish coating is suggested to be applied for the prevention of the stain of causing an uneven color on the wood. There are also some other types of finishes and these can be applied to most types of a wood stain except for the polyurethane varnish.

Apply first the coat stain by the use of a rag that is lint free. Foam brushes may be used as well. Use only a small amount of stain in one area and wipe any excess for avoiding any streaks. If you want it to have a deeper color, you may apply the stain several times but make sure to dry it out first before applying another coating.

Apply the finishing coat. One best suggestion for this is using the polyurethane type. This helps in sealing the stain and protecting the piano from damages due to moisture. After the finishing has been applied, sand it. Get the tack cloth and wipe the wood to remove the dust particles. Apply again the finish coat.

And lastly is doing the reassembling process. Dry out first all the coated parts before starting this method. You may test it through touching and if it still feels sticky, it is still wet. For the avoidance of scratches, place a carpet on your floor. Reassemble and follow the processes in reverse using the photographs and notes that you have.
