By Larry Brooks

There are quite a few things that can you call as quintessentially American, and banjo is one of them. In American bluegrass, jazz, folk music, and country, banjos plays an important part. This instrument is fun to play and mastering this will surely satisfy you. Deciding to learn is one thing, and buying one from custom banjo makers is another.

Finding a banjo can be very hard if you have no idea what exactly should be looking for. Not to mention that there are a vast arrays of selections out there. Beginners surely do not have that a good deal of information yet on how should they choose one. To help you with that, here are a few pointers to keep in mind.

Do not purchase using your eyes. Many of these have shiny hardware, glossy finish, and fancy inlays. The reason for that is to distract newbies with its features, which is the most important factor to think about when buying one. Listen to the sound that it makes, make sure it is pleasant to your ears and get a feel of when you use it.

How much this will cost you. The phrase what you get is what you pay for is applicable to this. You can find no frills banjos that are mass produced, and these are made in Asia. The cost of this along with hand crafted ones with deluxe appointments goes around from 150 dollars, while those with higher grade materials are more expensive.

Aluminum is not considered as a tone metal and this will not provide you the same brightness that you would get from bronze or steel. The tone ring sits right above and just down the rim, and not everyone has this. If its made from the right wood such as maple, you can get a natural, sweet, and woody tone.

What instrument can you get will be dependent to your budget. Select according to your budget, the features you want it to have, and commitment in mastering such. Think about how much are you only willing to pay. Buy the best ones within your budget, and make sure it is playable, has great appearance and sound.

Assessing its quality. Test the instrument by pressing down the strings towards the fingerboard one by one. When you press the strings, it should easily contact the frets, and doing that must not hurt your fingers. Each string have to be pluck and strum, then do that again, but this time together. When you do that, the sound it gives must be clear.

It should be easy to play. Beginners do not know about this, but many banjos have chubby and thick necks, and that is hard to grasp. D shaped banjo has a slender neck which makes it easy for beginners to grasp and fret. So when choosing, try to reach around the neck and see if you will not have troubles reaching it.

It should come with a warranty. Make sure that this comes with a warranty. You also have to check if it will be easy for you to get service from the manufacturer in case you needed their help. Information about the manufacturers should be given to you, email address, contact name, and contact number.
