Drumming Workshops - A Perfect Summer Activity for Your Child

By Ruth Williams

If your kids are on summer break, and you're looking for a fun and rewarding activity for them to engage in, a drumming workshop might be the right option for your family. This hobby is becoming more popular at schools in the UK and children of various ages can have fun participating.

Can You Tell Me What Drumming Workshops Are?

Drumming workshops are classes or programs that teach children how to do a specific style of drumming, often indigenous drumming. For example, an instructor might teach children the indigenous craft of Djembe drumming in Africa. Specialized instructional organizations and music schools offer workshops to schools and youth groups throughout the UK. Some benefits drumming workshops have as children's summer activities are as follows.

Entertaining and Imaginative

Drumming brings out the creativity in children, and is a lot of fun! They almost always enjoy it. It is thus a means to make their summer even more fun. Children seem to have an inbuilt feel for rhythm and are drawn to drumming. They will really like the excitement and fun of banging on a traditional drum with their hands along with others and will be creatively inspired by it. Composing their own drum beats and making up their own songs to go with the drumming they are doing, for instance.

Excellent for Exercise and Coordination Skills

Drumming is a great way for your child to improve their motor reflexes, and it's also a great workout! It takes hand eye coordination as well as muscular control and movement. Being a parent you probably realize the advantages of enjoyable activities to keep your child busy outside in the summer. You don't want them to sit around all day watching television or playing video games. On various levels, drumming is a very healthy activity. Another great aspect of the workshops is that many of them are held outdoors.

A Cultural Education

Learning native drumming gives children a cultural experience based on the place that the drums came from and the drumming styles originated. And so, this is an educational yet multifaceted experience for kids that helps to shape their cultural development and overall education. It shows children that other cultures exist and that they have many interesting customs and practices. Music is a common thread that binds people of many different backgrounds together, so a drumming workshop is a great way to demonstrate both cultural diversity and an underlying continuity.

Allows for Social Interaction

Drumming workshops allow for social interaction and let children have fun and make friends. These groups typically require people to assemble in a circular position and participate in drumming. They are thus able to meet both other children and adults doing the drumming and encounter people they have not known before. They get a chance to meet new people outside of their family and regular social circle.

You can also do this at home.

Your child's drumming fun and education can continue after the workshop is over by simply buying a drum that is taught in the workshop. Enrolling in a subsequent workshop will allow them to demonstrate what they have learned as well as practice drumming on their own and improve on it. When it's time to go back to school, they can continue drumming in their spare time.
