A Guide to European Music Festivals

By Solomon Isaacs

Being in a great venue can really make the difference between a lame music event and something that you'll always remember. One great way of making things cooler is to head further off, into Europe, to get your fix of music and fun. That way you get a location to remember, as well as the chance to potentially see a wider range of music, and meet more people from different places.

Hit Belgium for a surprisingly vibrant summer music scene. For rock that's worth writing home about, including Kings of Leon and Queens of the Stone Age, head to Leuven at the very end of June. One of the great things about this is how easy it is to travel there; a ticket for the festival means free travel on all trains to the venue. Another great Belgian offering, perhaps for a more grown-up crowd that still want to have fun, is Couleur Caf. This runs in late June, and has loads of world music alongside big time stars like Snoop Dog.

Europe does heavy metal and all-out rock music really well, and a good testament to this is Sonisphere. There are venues ranging across a whole host of countries, including Spain, Finland, Turkey and England, and a good range of rock too. Each event has different headliners, but the ones to watch in England are Gary Numan and Alice Cooper, for some legendary retro tracks.

If you go crazy for some metal or heavier rock then you'll find your fix at Sonisphere. This has multiple locations across the nations of Europe, and there's even one back home in Blighty. The Finland venue is particularly cool, with some serious alternative and themed rock, along with fans that are really into the whole scene.

So there's no excuse not to take in what Europe has to offer this summer. Whatever music you're into, and whatever kind of country you want to take in too, you're sure to find something to fit the bill, just as long as you can get tickets.
