Top 3 UK Folk Venues

By Valarie Park

You are always going to love and rate your favourite venues. Personally I have 2 favourites. A handful of you could agree that these two random locations (I suspect one is essentially a theatre but I was too 'merry' to notice) are indeed deserving of spots in the Top 3 and that's what folk is about, bringing people to a place to create the venue and the atmosphere.

In the usual sense of the word, a venue provides music and is there for your delight on a regular basis. The folk clubs I like are regarded as front runners and are great contributors to Britain folk scene.

Without good venues no one would not come to hear the music, so having atmospheric venues to play is essential for any band or music genus.

The Green Note, London is the best with live performances constantly; this vegetarian cafeteria is home to the folk music of the whole world. A complex mixture of roots, standard UK people, world, jazz, country and blues, the famous Green Note makes a trip to Camden Town, London really special.

The Nettlebed folk club is one of the UK's longest established folk locations, the Nettlebed People Location has held host to some of folk's legends along the years. Established in 1975, this Oxfordshire club is a non profit, volunteer run venture. Twelve folk make up the core voluntary workers at the Nettlebed, guaranteeing that the venue continues to be available for the new generation of folk bands.

The Kalamazoo Club is another London club, bringing the very best of acoustic music to our ears. Some of the finest in contemporary and modern folk bands and musicians play at this venue accompanying their great in house band, The Blinkin' Buzzards.

You choose venue number 4. It need not be a permanent venue. Folk music is often best experienced at a festival especially in some of the smaller festival tents. The best venue I ever visited was an old cinema in Yorkshire.
