Learn How To Play Jazz Piano

By Andrea D. Vacchiano

With this genre of music one needs to first understand how it works and how it has evolved. Before you start on the already evolved one, for a beginner it is always good practice to focus their attention on early ones and then develop slowly to the new thing. To effectively learn how to play jazz piano, you thus need to start with the basics.

presently there are both early great and new jazz recordings that you should at least buy. Take time and listen as they play out their tunes and take notes on how they are doing their stuff. Whatever you learn from listening to them, apply it to your own playing as well.

Your next move should be to learn all the twelve major different sounding scales as this will be very helpful in helping you identify the different sounds. Read all kinds of music and try out some basic stuff. While at it, consider buying a songbook from one of the masters in this genre of music.

With music you need to remember there are different scales which though they may appear as similar, they are completely different. On your part you thus need to be able to distinguish all this for you to effectively manage the piano. Having mastered that, you can take out the songbook and try it out practically as you read out the scales while pressing the key associated with it.

Very important to note that at first sound completely out of tune, but you need not worry as with practice it will eventually sound okay. Note that there are various scales each having its own sound and even meaning. You therefore need to dedicate time to learn them and as you do so practice them out.

Make a point of knowing more about the various modes and the different scales. Much as you practice, do not forget to maintain the habit of listening to other greats and try playing what they have played. Try out all the various music you hear playing and do not discriminate and remember with practice comes perfection.

Learning how to play jazz piano requires both time and dedication. Ensure you not only concentrate more on the various scales but also how to distinguish them for you to produce the right sound. Remember knowledge without practice is of no use, thus much as you have mastered all the scales, ensure to put them into practice as this will eventually make you an excellent pianist in this genre of music.
