Tips To Learn To Read Music

By Judy Jones

Unless you learn to read music you will always have difficulty in playing new pieces. This applies whether the piece you want to learn is something you are familiar with or not. Often, even if you think you know a music score inside out there will be something in it that you are not aware of.

Unless you can master this art you will not be able to pick up on all those nuances. Learning how to do anything takes time, and this is no exception. The first time you pick up a piece of sheet music can be daunting.

The best way to approach this is to break it down into small parts that you can approach one at a time. The written version of a tune will have many parts to it, but the basis of it is the stave. This is the row of lines which show the various notes.

The way a note is played is shown on the stave by using various symbols. These symbols show the speed at which a note should be played and also whether it needs to be played flat or sharp. When learning how to master reading music learning the notes is a good place to start.

Once you've mastered this it's time to put you skills to the test. Find a simple tune that you know well and that you have the score for. Nursery rhymes are a good stand by for this as they are well known and easy to play. Match the notes you are playing with how they are written down.

There are two parts to many tunes, one played with the left hand and one with the right. Trying to learn both at once can be a challenge so it is often better to learn them one at a time. Once you get started you should progress quickly and the more you practice the better you will become.
