Do You Know How To Sing From Your Diaphragm

By Pamela C Smith

It is very important to learn how to sing from your diaphragm. You have to learn the right way to breathe in order to vocalize properly so you will sound the best and not strain the voice. If you do not learn proper breathing techniques you will not be able to learn how to vocalize correctly.

Breathing only from the throat will lead to short contracted breaths that will keep the high notes out of reach for you. Learn stomach breathing so that you can vocalize properly and hit and sustain high notes longer. Vocalizing only with the throat leads to vocal cord strain and missed notes.

You might be wondering what you have to do in order to breathe properly. The first step is to start an aerobic training program that will build up the breathing muscles. Lose weight if you are overweight because being out of shape physically limits singing capacity.

If you smoke you have to stop. Tobacco is an effective way to destroy one's singing ability because tobacco smoke builds up in the throat and lungs and limits the amount of air you can take in and limits one's overall singing ability. Limit intake of alcohol as well because alcohol negatively affects the vocal muscles. Blood supply to the vocal cords is limited by strong drink.

Avoid cold weather and cold drafts and protect the voice from inclement weather in general. Do not go around shouting because vocal cords are delicate and are damaged by excessive shouting. Before singing warm the vocal cords up in order to avoid damaging them.

Most people do not use their lung power. If you want complete control of vocal ability you need to learn to use the entire lung capacity. One way to exercise the complete lung capacity is to vocalize with the diaphragm.

Do you know how to sing from your diaphragm? If you want to sing to the best in your class you have to learn to breathe properly so you do not strain the voice. If you do not breathe properly you will not consistently hit the high notes and will not reach a true singing potential. Get in shape physically by doing aerobic exercise which will also help you breathe correctly. Protect the voice against inclement weather and always warm up the voice before you begin singing.
