Singing Techniques: Vibrato

By Pamela C Smith

You will often find singing techniques such as the vibrato being used very effectively and impressively by opera singers. But many beginners run away from this technique due to the assumption that it is a technique that is very difficult to master. It is also incorrectly termed as the false extension of the voice. Even though vibrato is difficult to learn it is most certainly a natural feature of the voice. Poor singing habits may stop you from developing vibrato so its important to get rid of them first. Vibrato can be used in any genre of singing so it is not unusual to see not only Pavarotti but also rock stars like David Bowie using it. Learning vibrato will be simpler with the guidelines given below.

Before you set about trying to learn vibrato you will need to be sure that do indeed want to add it to your voice. Vibrato can sound spectacular in your singing but only if you have put in a substantial amount of hard work to perfect. Singing vibrato with half hearted efforts will certainly not give you the desired results. You may want to take the help of a voice coach.

You cannot sound good if you are not mindful of your posture. You must've noticed the straight and taut posture of classical and opera singers. Breathing correctly is essential for proper singing and when you stand straight you facilitate proper breathing. In order to get the vibrato effect it is important to not sing from your throat.

Good breathing is essential to get the vibrato effect. So always start your singing practice with a few good breathing exercises. For producing the desired effects from the various singing techniques always start by filling your lungs deeply and then letting the air out evenly like it were escaping from a balloon.

Also a relaxed body is important to produce pleasant vibrato effects. So the next step after deep breathing should be to relax all the parts of your body like neck, head, throat shoulders etc. Take a few minutes before you actually start singing to stretch yourself and release the tension.

After the deep breathing and relaxation you are ready to start. Begin by inhaling deeply and singing the syllable 'ah' on a sustained note. This will help you to keep your throat open. Remember that your voice should be relaxed while singing. Continue practicing and the vibrato will develop naturally. If patience is not one of your virtues, you can quicken the process by using your finger tips to push in and release your diaphragm.
