Guitar Tips - Learning To Bend Strings

By Amy Norman

By using bending strings, a more personalized and harmonious quality is given to the guitar. The technique is used mostly by lead guitar players but is also applied in all styles of playing. When it comes to making up the style of a guitar player, the two large components are vibrato techniques and string bending. More or less, the combination of these skills defines a considerable part of making your playing different than the other guy.

To reach a desired pitch, the strings should be bended far enough. One of the keys is to use three fingers to bend the string, instead of just one finger. On the fret you're bending, use your third finger and your first and second fingers should be placed on the frets behind it and when you do a bend, use the strength of all three fingers.

On the 7th fret of the third string, fret the note using your third finger. On the 5th and 6th fret, your other finger should follow. Bending this note up one step, which is the equivalent of two frets, is our goal and then the note is to be released to its original pitch. Before you do your first bend hit the note on the 9th fret, this will be your reference note. When you do your bend the goal is to make the tone of your bend "reach" the tone of the reference note. To repeat, your reference note is what you should hit then jump immediately to the correct position and play a bend until you are able to consistently match the reference note.

When it comes to playing your style, defining a large part of it is the length you hold the bend, how quickly you release it, and any vibrato you add to the bend. Having fun and doing a number of bends and releases in order to hear the sounds you can generate is a good idea. Try bending the note before you strike it so you just hear the release, or try using a wide or narrow vibrato so act character and color to your bends.

If you haven't used these muscles before, be patient because it will take time before they can strengthen. You'll eventually get the hang of it if you keep practicing.
