How Do High End Speaker Cables Improve Sound Quality

By Lillian Powell

Video and audio play huge roles when you are watching TV or playing games. Audio is even more important as music does not utilize video components. The video and audio industries seem to be advancing at a steady rate. High definition video is now the growing standard. With audio, there is not much improvement in the component industry. However, audio files are getting more compact and clearer with the aid of editing software. Likewise, high end speaker cables were developed for those who seek better quality.

There are various things that affect the sound produced by our systems. The cable, in particular, plays a vital role. The length, diameter, shielding and electrical characteristics of the cable determine the quality of the output.

The wire characteristics referred to here are the inductance, resistance and capacitance. High end speaker cables are properly configured to have low resistance and medium capacitance and inductance. This makes the cable a good medium for the signal to pass through. With this configuration, attenuation or the loss of signal is kept to a bare minimum.

These wires also have metal shielding. This protects the signal along the wires from interference. An example of interference is the loud thudding sound you hear when you use a cellphone near a speaker. There are also other sources of interference such as wireless routers, microwaves and cordless phones. Other wires can also cause this problem.

When a wire interferes with another, crosstalk ensues. This occurs when wires are close to one another. Electrons have a tendency to jump and sometimes move to the nearest conducting wire. High end speaker cables are not affected by this thanks to the shielding they have.

If you look at these details, you can infer that nothing was done to improve the sound quality. Regardless, there will be a sizable improvement in the sound as noise, attenuation and interference are almost completely eradicated.
