Big Knowledge About Latin Drum Loops

By Melissa Chia

Being used for a variety of instruments that make Latin music, the expression Latin drum loops refers more to a pack of beats that is used repeatedly, to provide background for a song. Many drummers find the style of drumming intriguing. For being a good drummer, it is often important to learn the beats, which are different than any type of beats.

The origins of the beats are in the African tribal music and it has different tempos, feelings and rhythms. Because it is so unique, the style it is very difficult to combine with other genres. For example, the beats are hard to be learned by rockers. In rock music the snares, bass and hit hats are commonly used.

A drummer can learn many genres, but it may not be easy. Being older than the majority of modern genres, like rock, country or pop, the genre includes the following sub-genres: Beebop, Cumbia, Bossa, Salsa, Samba, Afro American and Brazilian. It is often good to know all the genres, because in various situations they may be needed by the public.

The patterns used for the loops, but also in other genres like swing and jazz, are 2/3 Rhumba Clave and 3/2 Rhumba Clave. Other patters that can be learned are: Cascarra, Bossa, Sun Clave and Shuffle.

The versatility of the style gives the drummer the possibility to use many different instruments. The most common used combination is of two drums, a conga and the cowbells. Other instruments can be: timbales, toms, wood blocks etc.

Latin drum loops are used mainly for background, when other instruments are also played. In most cases, the instruments that are used for the genre have a lower compatibility to other styles. Even if it is often difficult to learn Samba or Salsa, drummers may have to do it, as it can be helpful in many occasions.
