How Does Music Help A Child Do Good In School?

By Dottie Bates

For non music aficionados, it would be easy to disregard the importance of music in the way a child faces academic life. In educational institutions or learning centers, music is considered a non-core or simply a minor subject in comparison with the sciences, mathematics and the language arts. But, it cannot be discounted that it is able to help rouse the minds and bodies of students.

The fact that music education positively affects a child's intellectual aptitude in math and in other subjects has already been established in various researches. It aids in the development of analytical planning that is needed to learn and understand mathematical problems. As an example, a student taking up piano lessons actually fares better than a student who is not into music education at all.

Most schools nowadays realize the significance of music education programs such that they are already incorporated into their academic curriculum. Generally, children with music background are likely to have higher scores in school than individuals who don't attend music lessons. This gives children the chance to enhance their proficiency in all subjects. They then find it easy to answer questions and problems in exams. The same is true when it comes to seat work and projects.

Kids who have the ability to read musical notes and play an instrument, especially at an early age, perform very well in other areas of their school life. But aside from being excellent in the academics, they also manifest enhanced self-confidence. Not everybody gets the opportunity to learn how to play a musical instrument. Therefore, a child who has the gift of making beautiful music with, say, a violin shall grow up believing that he or she can do much more later on in life.

Another benefit that it gives is in the development and improvement of the child's coordination as well as other motor skills. Music lets the child discover ways to perform rhythms. This allows the child to physically and mentally move more quickly but in a more precise manner. Perhaps the most essential benefit is the discipline that's instilled in him which he could apply to be successful in whatever direction he chooses to take.
