Guitar - The Different Parts & Proper Care Guide

By Hansen Thompson

Any aspiring guitar player or musician for that matter should be familiar with the fundamental parts of the guitar. The parts of the different kinds of guitars available for sale in the stores are fairly the same. When getting yourself acquainted with the various parts of the guitar, it will be best to grab an actual guitar so you can appreciate it better.

You will see that at the top end part of the guitar is the head or headstock, which contains the six keys. It likewise serves to hold the strings on the part of the guitar. The keys, also referred to as the tuners, are used to tweak the pitch of each of the strings. By rotating the keys clockwise or counterclockwise, you're able to adjust the tightness of each string so you can alter the guitar's tune.

You will find that there's a white colored plastic bar just below the headstock. This is called the nut. It helps to properly align the strings so that they'll stay in place. The neck is actually the longest part of the guitar which accommodates the strings, frets and also the nut.

The frets, usually in colors gold or black, are the strips along the length of the neck. They guide the guitar player in shifting to higher or lower octaves. There are 6 strings and each of which has a different thickness from the other 5.

The body is the largest part of the guitar. It houses the bridge and the sound hole. Situated at the lower section of the body is the bridge and this is where the strings are first inserted before being aligned to the nut and then to the tuners. The sound hole is where the sound bounces and this allows for beautiful music to be produced when the strings are strummed.

It is easy to care for your guitar. All it needs is a caring hand and a microfiber cloth to remove dust and traces of fingerprints on just about any part. However, special attention should be given to the crevices wherein dust usually builds up. It's when you change the strings that it's best to clean in between the frets. As for storage, just like with wine, keep it in a cool and dry place protected from the sun, preferably in a guitar case.
