Intelligent music management with the Pioneer CDJ

By Rachel Ryebank

2001 saw the arrival of the Pioneer CDJ on the club scene and despite the popularity of the legendary turntables, it quickly became an indispensable part of DJ kit. DJs could at last leave their heavy vinyl collection at home and take advantage of the developments in digital music.

With time, the Pioneer CDJ also began to lose ground in the face of increasing use of laptop computers as the must-have DJ mixing device. In order to keep a foothold in the DJ booth, Pioneer had to respond to the competition with an improved version that could offer all the latest functions and connectivity options that DJs need.

The size of the screen was drastically increased, which made navigating around a hefty music collection easy, even in the dark. The brightness of this new screen was easily adapted to personal preferences so as to avoid glare.

Improved management of the DJ's music library was another major change intended to secure the Pioneer CDJ 2000's place in the DJ booth. The Rekordbox software creates an intelligent music library that can be installed on a laptop to prepare mixes on the CDJ. MP3s are imported from other software, and once in the library, Rekordbox indicates the BPM and other track features.

The library also offers the DJ the chance to prepare music and sets, by setting cue and loop points which will be remembered by the CDJ during the live performance. Tracks can be colour coded and tagged, and information added to help the DJ navigate his way through a hefty music collection.

This intelligent software can also be used during a live mix to record cue points so they can be recalled and re-used at a later date. The Pioneer CDJ has many more functions that are designed to safeguard its place it DJ hearts and in clubs.
