Some Simple Steps on How to Clean Your MIDI Controller

By Donald Grossy

Musicians are, more frequently than not, busy folk, they compose music, go to places where they believe they can find their incentive to find music, go to gigs, bars to play their music, etc. We do not always take time to stop for a second and have time to clean our MIDI controllers - it is tiresome and time-consuming. But fess up or not, there are still rare moments when we come to an awareness that our musical tools somewhat require a small cleaning. Well, for all those busy musicians out there, I have come up with 3 easy steps for you to give your MIDI controllers a little break from all of the dirt and dust without you having to go thru a tiresome and time-consuming act.

Utilize a clean fabric with white-colored toothpaste to wipe your keys with. You may use milk or water and put it in a cloth but it shouldn't be dripping wet. Rub the keys gradually instead of scrubbing them. Wipe everything else, like the knobs, faders, LED, screen with the same material you utilised for cleaning the keys.

Wait for the MIDI controller to dry and then check all of its connections as well as its condition. Plug in all the wires and plug it in before you open up the MIDI keyboard. Turn the volumes up and the other functionality as well and be observant about any sounds you are not supposed to hear or any unusual aftermath of your cleaning.

Finally, for storage, have the MIDI controller the other way up so that one can decrease the accumulation of particles onto the keyboard but instead they will be only on the lower side of the controller. That may save a little time and effort as well.

Following these steps will not just save you from all the time and effort you will waste by taking your full MIDI controller down and individually cleaning its pieces, you may also prolong the life of your MIDI controller or MIDI keyboard.
