Festival Fever Fashion For The Not So British Summer

By Andrew Nibbet

Don't sink into the quagmire of British festival mud which will no doubt come as a result of the UK's aberrant climate. The 1970s is bringing its kaleidoscopic chic to Glastonbury glam, but should the rain come down, you can rest assured these spring/summer 2011 collections will keep you decidedly waterless.

You never know when it might rain in England, so it is essential to include an outer layer to deter the elements. Universal Works and Citizens of Humanity offer great waterproofs in the men's style stakes, while YMC and Hollister do their bit for the female contingent. Keep out the rain in the versatile stylings of Burberry Prorsum, or in bouverie cotton by Rag & Bone, the Cargo from L'Agence, Temperley's trench coat made from cotton twill, and the Pea coat in All Saints' men's fashion department. The parka jacket is fashion's phenomenon - try River Island's fur-lined number or the ruffled versions fashioned from cotton-sateen by Anna Sui and A.P.C. In men's designer fashion, Levi's festival special buttoned jackets, complete with military-style epaulettes, are definitely worth a look.

Denim jackets are for men or women and their versatility, old-school cool, and ability to keep out the cold are seeing them reappear in the guise of Current/Elliott, Notify's capped-sleeve, or G-Star and True Religion's distressed vibe. Like water off a duck's back, Rochas' waxed cotton, or wax-clothed jackets by Penfield will keep you dry, but to bring out the sunshine Jil Sander's tafetta parka is for colour fiends. Firetrap shirts, Adidas hoodies, and Replay's reversible nylon outer layers will keep out the nip on cooler nights while all in one shirt hoods from YMC and Huntington & Co will help keep your luggage camp site friendly.

Lure the wet weather away with N.D.C's mid-calf boots, or for women, Marc by Marc Jacobs buckles up with short rubber ones. No festival-faring male should be seen without Clae and Pointer's ankle boots to help complete the laid-back party-goer look while he grooves to his most-admired musicians. Wellingtons are an absolute necessity, classics Hunter offer patterns, while Diesel's versatile creations can be added to any outfit, from skirts to dresses to trousers and jumpsuits.

In the women's style stakes, a windy day may call for full length skirts and dresses, but with the maxi dress making a reappearance keeping the chill out shouldn't be too difficult. There's so much to choose from; Michael by Michael Kors dip-dye it, while Won Hundred work jersey fabrics. Clothing to keep men out of the breeze include cargo pants from Carhartt, Sumpremebeing and Gio Goi, as well as chinos which take it to the floor by Libertine-Libertine.

Wholesome leather is the inspiration for accessories, with Oscar de la Renta in plated gold chain-trimmed or beaded and gold-vermeil, in addition to silver bohemian bracelets from Chan Luu and black fake leather-studded linking necklaces from the women's Burberry collection. Meshed rings from All Saints and Hobo and Nonnative bracelets add the icing on the cake for men's accessories. Penfield show their experience in outdoor headgear - their bucket hat and straw trilbies are hats to been seen in for both men and women who can add colourful bands with Paul Smith and Etro patterning.

Protect your party essentials from getting seriously soggy with leather cross-shoulder bags and satchels from Christian Louboutin, Mulberry and Michael Kors plus ornate 70s-style beaded material offerings from Paul & Joe in women's fashion or backpacks from Pointer and retro messenger bags from Adidas and Gola for men.

You don't want to get caught out in bad weather while listening to your favourite band, so make sure you plan your outfit for all eventualities this summer for superb festival shenanigans.
