Learning Guitar - Just How Hard Is It?

By Jack Wogan

The guitar has always had a place in the contemporary musical landscape. It has seen many forms throughout its long history, extending as far as 3 millennia ago. Nowadays, we can distinguish the acoustic and electric categories. While the acoustic guitar is the direct offspring of the classical instrument, the electric variation is a modern invention from the beginning of the 20th century, born out of the necessity of louder sound. Since the output signal is electric, it can be modified with different effects. However, the weak signal needs to pass through an amplifier first in its way to the loudspeaker.

Rock and roll and the electric guitar will remain forever intertwined. Not all the iconic guitarists enjoyed a classic musical education, though. It is now known that the man that is commonly perceived as the greatest guitarist that ever lived, Jimi Hendrix, was a self-taught phenomenon that seized every opportunity to perfect his skills. He used to replay the songs on his records by the ear and always listened to advice from older artists he came in contact with. With a little ambition and talent, you could go on a world-conquering trip just like Jimi had. The first steps are not difficult, although you should understand that if you truly desire to become a virtuoso, a lot of dedication from your part is needed.

The first thing you will need in your journey is obviously the guitar itself. With so many good instruments available on the market, deciding what to buy can be pretty hard. You should begin by choosing between the main categories: acoustic or electric? It all depends on what type of instrument you would like to learn. In the past, specialists used to always recommend an acoustic instrument for beginners, but the electric guitars had become much cheaper since then and it is recommended that you start with the best instrument your money can buy. Many like taking into account Fender guitars due to their quality.

A teacher can be a very good investment for your hard-earned money, as it is much easier to hone your skills this way. But not everybody can afford this luxury. Do not give up hope yet though, there are many excellent books and DVDs that can help your progress tremendously. Notation, chords and musical theory will be very useful to you, so do not neglect them.

Almost each one of us has favorite musicians. There is a great probability that among them there are a few amazing guitarists too. It has never been a better time for you to try and achieve your musical dreams - so get a guitar and start learning!
