Properly Done Professional Audio Mixing

By Bridgett Molina

In music production professional audio mixing is the heart of the business. This is where the sounds for an album or compact disc are shaped. The importance of having this done properly is as much a factor as the performance itself.

With the music on each track balanced and individual instruments able to be heard clearly, the sounds are on the way to being mastered, and will enhance the quality of the music. Mastering can add ambiance and dimension to the mix in addition to effects like re-verbs, delays and chorus.

Many times the frequencies of the singer is obliterated by the over powering guitars or drums. Mastering can do a couple of things: one boost the voices and try to get it clear enough to be heard, or cut the frequency of the instrument that is drowning them out. The second option would give a more balanced influence in the whole.

Room acoustics are very important for the quality of the work being done. Having the combination of both room acoustic and studio monitor quality will give the more honest result. This means if it sounds good there it will sound good elsewhere. In mixing decent studio monitors include the left and right as well as the near field and sub-woofers for the bass frequencies.

A pro mixer will try to focus on the balance and levels between the tracks and instruments. He will careful to apply equalizer and compression making the mix sound the best material possible but not loud. Compression adjustments are helpful in getting the sounds shaped.

Overall a few suggestions for a better sounding finished product. With more blended instruments and vocals that are actually able to be heard. The approach of loud is better is not the case with professional audio mixing the clarity and proper adjustments are made for perfection.
