How To Learn The Piano At Home

By Andy Penbram

Up until recently the only approach to actually learn how to play the piano or keyboards has been to go to regular weekly classes with a professional piano teacher. You would without any doubt spend some time getting a grip on the way to read music, playing scales and learning a selection of classical pieces. There have frequently been several self taught pianists however often it was easier and more effective to see a regular piano teacher. A particularly satisfactory way to learn piano today might be to download a home study course to your computer containing audio and video piano lessons.

You can get the majority of the piano courses for home study on DVD or as a download allowing you to store them and play them from your computer. The quality courses are well designed and will lead you from total starter level to a very high intermediate level. For each lesson there is usually a video file which may show in detail how you should be playing and a collection of audio files containing exercises you can do while practicing and perfecting that particular lesson. It is actually a bit like having a private piano teacher right there with you in your house available for lessons when you have the time.

Being taught this way is extremely comfortable and a lot more flexible than the established technique of learning by attending piano classes. A whole lot of practice is still essential but you will pass onto the following lessons when ever you are ready. If you don't feel absolutely happy with the current lesson then you're under no pressure to move on, you can even return and repeat previous lessons if you think you need more practice. On the contrary, if you are ready to advance to the next lesson then you don't have to wait for next weeks piano lesson to come around, you can move on at any time you're prepared.

Learning piano in the peace of your own home has 1 or 2 advantages but one of the most appealing it that is is actually cheap with a home study course typically costing approximately the same as one or two lessons with a specialised teacher. In addition, as the courses have a non-traditional approach to teaching you also will be learning several styles and methods at a time.

To summarise,,, if you employ a home study piano course then you will get a really complete experience learning how to improvise, play by ear, how to read music and chord charts and how to play in one or two styles or genres. It is totally possible to be able to go from starter level and advance up to a particularly high intermediate level by using just one home study piano course.
