How to play drums- Drum Rudiments

Drum Rudiments are necessary basic drum patterns in learning how to play the drum, that every serious drummer needs to learn. Drum rudiments are foundational building blocks of drumming. i.e wrist movement and stick control. These basic drum patterns are used as practice exercises on snare drum or practice pads. These exercises helps to train your wrist and finger for speed, control, power and coordination.

What are Rudiments
In start there was a set of original 13 rudiments. It was than increased to 26 and finally setting at 40 for now. These 40 exercises can be grouped together into five categories.
1) Single Stroke
2) Multiple Bounce
3) Double Stroke
4) Flam
5) Drag
To practice Drum rudiments as a drummer is not like going to gym as a professional athlete. A hockey player must train his muscles to hit harder, skate harder and shoot harder. The situation is for a drummer. We must train our muscles to hit accurate, harder and faster. Drum rudiments force us to do practice of stick movement. Skills of a drummer on the drum can be easily improved by going through basic exercises.

There are not so disadvantages to practicing these drum rudiments. You should practice drum rudiments more than practicing on a drum set. By practicing your essential drum rudiments, you can never go wrong. Amazing thing about there is that it will force you to go back to the core of drumming. You can distracted with drums in front of you but when you are using a practice pad working on your rudiments, you don't have that choice. One more problem with rudimental practice is that it does not work independently on the drum set. Your are unable to hear different drum voices by using only single pad.

During learning how to play drum rudiments, the best way is take three per week. In this way you can learn new things on a weekly basis and can build up the strength in wrist. During learning the rudiments, it is necessary to start off quite slow and than move to a faster speed only when you have mastered the rudiments. You should practice rudiments everyday without fail until you become confident that it is possible for you to execute them without hesitation and instantly.
The First three recommended rudiments are single stroke roll, the double stroke roll and paradiddle. Most commonly used drum rudiment is single stroke roll.
The sticking technique is

Right Left Right Left Right Left Right Left
The double stroke roll is also fairly simple although not as commonly used as the single stroke roll.

The paradiddle is a little more complicated. paradiddle is the most important rudiment of all as it helps the most with hand coordination.

Overall there are forty drum rudiments. Learning all of them on a fluent level will really help your strength and endurance and will certainly make you stand out over other drummers today. Learning all of the rudiments really is the first step to becoming a really good drummer, you will be very surprised how much they could drastically improve your playing.
