70s Festival Fashion For Sassy Sisters

By Christopher Fry

While we all hope the sun will be a regular guest this season, if weather does disappoint at least women's designer fashion will be shining, with dazzling neon to shock, colour blocking to excite the eyes and loud patterns to assault the senses this season.

Dive into the nautical with this season's must-have t-shirt designs, go wild with mock-snake skin and exotic animal prints or get groovy with the psychedelic spread of 70s inspired colours that will be gracing fashion wardrobes this summer. Embrace the festival spirit as the summer approaches, taking the relaxed and lazy side of fashion with styles and tones that embody the sunshine filled British countryside in the spring and summer months. Transport yourself back to Woodstock or the early days of Glastonbury by loosing inhibitions and feeling the power of the crowd whilst enjoying the simple pleasures of sleeping under the stars and discovering good music.

The resurgence of this annual tradition of shows has set new styles in motion with the muddy paths running up to the fields doubling as a red carpet, as we study the festival chic of just who's wearing what. The bohemian trends of festivals past have twisted and turned like a helter skelter to bring us this year's offerings with a kaleidoscope of colours to liven up the crowds.

Women's fashions will see a raft of colour and ruched designs like layered mini-skirts by Sessun or the bold patterns and prints on vests from Something Else by Natalie Wood and Christian Kane, with a different take on Fair Isle tanks from Giles Deacon. Deacon's other catwalk visions of balloon sleeves and Pom pom hats seemed to fall in line perfectly with the 70's theme and a new revived series of Charlie's Angels on its way. The restoration of other 70's shows like Hawaii 5.0 may have also sparked the imagination in men's designer fashion with Hawaiian prints from Ringspun and Marc by Marc Jacobs but we'll try not to blame Wonder Woman's screen comeback for the more questionable return of women's granny panties.

Stepping away from the boho look and you'll find 70s disco dancing on the scene, additions such as satin scarves and platform heels will find their way into festival wardrobes this season. Stacked shoes and flared trousers have made appearances on the catwalk thanks to designers such as Derek lam, Louis Vuitton and Roberto Cavalli who are also pushing forward denim and suedes as spring/summer's material of choice, if this doesn't take your fancy Salvatore Ferragamo is pushing the jersey dress and long skirts in subdued brown tones. Elsewhere colour is prominent: Prada's bold designs, Etro's salute to tribal art and TopShop Unique's churning patterns.

Men's designer fashion has seen the return of tie dyes, with scoop, cowl and round neck t-shirts and vests from the likes of Diesel. T-shirts are paying homage to 70's music with striking images of Jim Morrison from The Doors and Bowie's Ziggy Stardust on Amplified, Alice Cooper on Worn Free and John Lennon on the House of Gods, while vintage brands have dominated the simple polo shirt styles such as Farah Vintage, Fila Vintage, Polo by Ralph Lauren and Fred Perry's original laurel wreath motif. Retro macs can be found by Penfield, Universal Works and YMC for those cooler days.

70s influence leaks into Men's accessories as well with Asos supplying wooden beads, Vivienne Westwood's rock chic skull chains and Paul Smith's beanies available in this season's brights. Team with classic sunglass brands like Aviators, Wayfarers or Ray Ban's Clubmasters or try something new from Sunpocket sunglasses, Superdry and adidas originals have designed great retro-styled courier bags, and for your feet get into the beach mode with sandals by Berkenstock or boat shoes from YMC. For the girls, Gucci proves bigger is best with their large sunglasses or go for elegance with Victoria Beckham, for the beach try Havaianas flip-flops, for the festival Hunter Wellingtons are a must and for out and about get continental with Swedish Hasbeen clogs. Scarves from Missoni and Mulberry, an oversized sunhat from Eugenia Kim and a crochet band from Lipsy and you'll be ready to hit any occasion sporting the 70s style of the season.
