Twenty - Create Your Own ABBA Costumes

By Joshua Lukas

Costumes are popular with all ages. Small kids like to go trick-or-treating dressed up as favorite characters and animals. Teens and adults often enjoy going to costume parties. For those who are going as a group, it can be quite fun to dress as members of a band. One of the best ideas for a group is to wear ABBA costumes. It is much easier to obtain Swedish band ABBA costumes than it may seem.

If there are just two girls in your group, you might want to go as Anni-Frid "Frida" Lyngstad and Agnetha Falkskog. Bjorn Ulvaues and Benny Andersson, the male half of the band, would suit two guys going to a costume party. If you are going to the party alone, you might want to find a solo singer but choose wisely - an Elvis costume covered in sparkles and sequins won't be the easiest costume to create!

If you aren't worried about money and you have plenty of time, you could hire a seamstress to sew your ABBA costumes for you. However, this can be very expensive and nothing like as much fun as making your own ABBA costumes!

However, what is even more rewarding is making your own ABBA costumes. If you are good at making patterns, following patterns, and sewing, then all that is needed are some patterns for the types of clothes ABBA wears or wore and some material that matches their outfits. The measurement of the person who is going to be wearing the costume being made is also needed so that it actually fits and is not made too big or too small. Some people are not so good at sewing or following patterns. Surprisingly, ABBA costumes can easily be thrown together from things found in stores as well. There is no need to buy completely new objects. In fact, that is usually one of the worst ways to come up with a unique ABBA costume.

It is always a great idea to go thrift shopping at the Goodwill or any second hand store. This will save you money and time. These stores usually provide old style clothing that is perfect for ABBA costumes. You can find many different types of clothing at a thrift store. All you have to do is buy, wash, and wear. The clothes offered at thrift shops are usually very cheap, that way, if you need to make adjustments, you never feel bad about ruining a highly expensive piece of clothing. Cut away and make your ABBA costume your own.

The plain clothes that are worn are very easy to imitate. Sometimes things such as vests and headbands need to be made. The harder costumes are the shiny ones. However, often times there are 70s clothing or disco costume items at thrift shops. It is important to look in different areas rather than just the normal clothing to find what can be made into new clothes. It is also important to look at children's and baby clothes because these things can often be cut and made into new items such as headbands and wrist bands. The colors found there are often the ones that are needed. If not, these things can be dyed or drawn on to make what is needed.

If your hair does not match your costume, you can always buy a wig or you can save money and do your hair up and dye it with temporary dye that washes out. ABBA costumes are all natural hair colors, so finding a wig or dye to fit the costume is really easy. If you really want to make your ABBA costumes look authentic, get your hair styled that way that ABBA did. Keep your ABBA costume cheap and go to hair school or have a friend who knows how to do hair do it for you.

The platform shoes might be the most difficult part of your ABBA costume. You should start your search for ABBA style platform shoes months before the event, if you have that much time to plan. Once you have your ABBA costumes ready, you will definitely have fun and draw lots of admiring glances at the party!
