Why Giving Kids Music Lessons Is Encouraged

By Henry Scott

The effect of music lessons in the progress of IQ in children is still blurred, with numerous discussions on the subject existing. There are parents who believe that their babies will grow up brighter if they play classical music while they are asleep, thanks to a research held in the '90s that claim listening to Mozart classical music can enhance one's spatial reasoning. A lot of parents are giving their children music classes as early as possible because the general belief today is that music helps children become smarter, although there are researches about the subject that produced different outcome.

However, many dispute that since various conditions affect one's intelligence quotient, it is hard to measure its development by just throwing in music lessons to their curriculum. Merely studying its impact to those who have music classes will not ensure stable results. Maybe the children who can ordinarily pay for music lessons fit in to the socioeconomic class that has higher IQ average than those who can't afford the extracurricular hobby. Or maybe the children targeted for the study are in the age where they naturally acquire interest in lots of things, thus exposing their minds to learning.

While the impact of studying music to kids's IQ are still disputable, there are benefits of giving music lessons to the children. The constructive effects of music in children are unquestionable, although its role in the development of their general intelligence is not certain.

Taking music lessons can help channel little children's restless energy into something constructive. They can find musical programs physically fulfilling and mentally uplifting. And for preschool kids particularly, they will be able to explore their surroundings through music and absorb information in an enriching and engaging way.

And while music programs for little children are generally enjoyable and lively, they also compel kids to concentrate and practice memorization. The training can help kids develop their curiosity in music or even in other things also. They are also good early training ground before children begin attending school.

While there are mothers and fathers who dream of making their children music geniuses, music lessons don't necessarily make them stars. The programs are usually just designed to open up children to music, boost their self-esteem, and assist them in finding their interest.
